Monday Mayhem Update

The 7th graders are now a week into their Mayhem projects. As they become better-acquainted with their topics, they will be writing blog posts, summarizing their work thus far. Below is our first blog post along with a few pictures capturing our 7th graders in action. Enjoy!

The Ballista Catapult Project
by Brandon Hahn, Ohm Nabar, and Daniel Nuzhny

Our project is to build a catapult. However, it was not just a matter of just sitting down and building it. We had to conduct research on background information. First, we researched the types of catapults (Ballista, Trebuchet, Mangonel) and how they were used. Then, we had to figure out which catapult we wanted to build and the materials we needed. We chose the Ballista and made a blueprint. Then, we figured out what size we wanted the catapult to be. After all that, we were ready to start building.
Over the weekend, we got together and started building the catapult. First, we built a base using four wooden boards. We cut them out of a ten foot board. We considered the corners and crafted an 18 inch by 18 inch square for the base. Then we built the arrow shaft. We cut three more 18 inch pieces of wood, staggering the middle one about one inch. Then we nailed it together. We will continue to build the catapult and it will be ready by Friday the 24th.
