The 7th Grade Mayhem Project

Dear 7th Grade Parents/Guardians,

Today we kicked off the 7th grade Mayhem Project, which will begin next week. From May 13th through May 31st, instead of attending regularly scheduled team classes, students will be working on an independent project called Mayhem. The purpose of the Mayhem project is to learn about a particular topic or perspective from the Renaissance and Age of Discovery, using the skills and content that they have learned throughout the year in Cultural Connections, Math, or Science. Students will be placed in research groups according to their expressed, individual academic interests. It is our belief that the ability to choose a subject and topic of study will motivate them to develop intellectual curiosity as well as independent learning skills.

While working on their independent projects, students will also be preparing for the Shakespeare Festival, during which they will perform memorized scenes from A Midsummer Night’s Dream for their peers and teachers. On May 31st, the entire 7th grade class will be presenting their Mayhem projects for the D-E community, including parents. Inspired by the Renaissance and Age of Discovery, they will create a village out of their presentations, and in addition, selected acting troupes will have the chance to perform their scenes from A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Mayhem and the Shakespeare Festival are both exciting D-E traditions that will act as capstones, marking the end of a successful year in 7th grade. Invitations to the Mayhem Day presentations on May 31st will be emailed soon.

 Sincerely,
 The 7th Grade Team Teachers
